Obelisk fron the East High Light with Obelisk Old high light
The Old High Light and "The Obelisk " Until quite recently the Old High Light or Beacon (shown right) had a large obelisk on its South side. It seems that this may have been the site of a beacon which was lit there to guide ships before the High and Low Lights were built. The Rising Sun pub (corner of Tyne St. and Beacon St.) and the obelisk were demolished during; an earlier regeneration programme.
(Later High Light in the distance)
(There are similar beacons on the Lawe Top at South Shields - see South of the Tyne pictures)
