Under a bridge in Mariners' Lane in Tynemouth, there once was a railway line. In 1872, A bored signalman named Jabez Jewitt found the time to carve his name and occupation into the parapet of the bridge, where it can still be seen
Coping stone
On a coping stone, in copperplate handwriting, these words were carved
Jabez Jabez  Jewitt Jewitt
Signal Signal Man Man
The Burgess Roll of 1878 lists a 'Jabis' Jewitt as living in 36 Percy Square (see map on next page).
